Taliban say Afghan traders’ goods damaged in Karachi mall fire

The massive fire in Karachi mall has also damaged goods belonging to Afghan traders, Taliban officials at Afghanistan’s embassy in Pakistan said on Tuesday, citing local authorities.

They said that said 23 containers of commercial goods, including items belonging to Afghan traders, were affected in the blaze at Gul Plaza, a multi-storey shopping centre in the city.

They said commercial attachés had visited the site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the fate of Afghan-owned goods.

Pakistani authorities have not provided a detailed breakdown of losses involving Afghan traders, and the Taliban have not released precise estimates of the damage.

The fire broke out late on Saturday and took firefighters more than 24 hours to bring under control. At least 21 people were killed, including a firefighter, and dozens were reported missing as parts of the building collapsed during rescue efforts, Pakistani officials said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Afghan traders frequently use commercial hubs in Karachi for storage and trade, making them vulnerable to disruptions caused by major incidents in the city.
