Afghan journalist detained by Pakistani police in Islamabad

Sources have confirmed that Pakistani police detained Hamoon Khamosh, an Afghan journalist in Islamabad, on Sunday.

Khamosh was taken into custody in the B-17 sector of the capital, sources said.

Authorities also detained a number of Afghan migrants during the same police operation, though no official figures have been released.

Pakistani officials have not publicly commented on the arrest.

The detention comes amid a wider crackdown by Pakistani authorities on Afghan nationals living in the country — including journalists — many of whom face the threat of forced deportation.

According to Nai in Exile, at least five Afghan journalists and media workers have been detained by Islamabad police over the past week.

Pakistan began a large-scale deportation campaign targeting undocumented Afghan nationals in late 2023, prompting criticism from human rights groups and international agencies, who have warned of the risks posed to returnees, particularly women, children, and those affiliated with civil society or the media.
