Afghanistan opened their three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe with a commanding 53-run win at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday. A strong all-round performance, led by Azmatullah Omarzai, helped the visitors take a 1–0 lead in the series.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 180 for 6 in their 20 overs. Ibrahim Zadran top-scored with a brisk 52 off 33 balls, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributed 39 off 25. Omarzai played a key finishing role with a 21-ball 27, including one six and one four.
In reply, Zimbabwe’s chase never truly gained momentum. Mujeeb Ur Rahman led the bowling attack with impressive figures of 4 for 20 in just 3 overs. Omarzai backed up his batting heroics with the ball, taking 3 for 29, and was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance.
Abdullah Ahmadzai also played a crucial role with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 20 runs and assisting in a run-out.
For Zimbabwe, Tinotenda Maposa showed promise with a quick 32 off 15 deliveries, and Brad Evans and Brian Bennett chipped in with 24 each. But their efforts weren’t enough, as the hosts were bowled out for 127 in 16.1 overs.
Captain Rashid Khan remained unbeaten with the bat and marshaled his bowlers efficiently to secure a convincing win.
The second T20I will be played later this week, with Afghanistan eyeing a series win and Zimbabwe hoping to bounce back.
