Pakistan’s special envoy visits Tehran for talks on Afghanistan

Sadiq Khan, Pakistan’s special envoy to Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Sadiq Khan, arrived in Tehran on Sunday for talks with Iranian officials, Pakistani media reported.

The discussions are expected to focus on issues related to Afghanistan and broader regional cooperation, according to Pakistani outlets. Iranian media said Khan, who represents Pakistan’s prime minister on Afghan affairs, will meet senior Iranian officials to review recent regional developments and bilateral ties.

The visit comes after a joint statement by the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Iran, China and Russia opposing any renewed U.S. military presence or basing in Afghanistan. The statement also expressed concern about the presence of militant groups including Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Jaish al-Adl, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, calling them threats to regional and global security.

Taliban have rejected those claims.
