Taliban education minister says US drones patrol Afghanistan’s skies

Habibullah Agha, Taliban’s acting education minister.

The Taliban’s minister of education has said that US drones continue to fly over Afghanistan, describing the country’s airspace as “occupied.”

Speaking at an event in Paktia on Sunday, Sept. 21, Habibullah Agha said advances in drone technology have left Afghanistan vulnerable.

“Our airspace is still occupied,” he said. “At night, American drones patrol the skies, and we do not have the ability to see them or force them to turn back.”

His remarks come as US President Donald Trump has spoken repeatedly in recent days about reclaiming Bagram air base. On Saturday, he told reporters the United States wants the base back “as soon as possible.”

In response, the Taliban called on Washington to honor the 2020 Doha agreement and to adopt what they described as a “realistic and rational approach.”
