At least 43 suicide attempts have been recorded in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost province over the past two weeks, mostly linked to economic hardship, unemployment and psychological stress, according to sources at the provincial hospital.
The sources told Amu on Sunday that while some of those who attempted suicide were saved by doctors, several others died. Among the cases were five teenagers, including one girl, the sources said.
Taliban have reportedly barred local media from reporting on suicides and have restricted public funeral ceremonies for victims, the sources added.
In a recent case, a man died by suicide on Friday, Aug. 22, also due to financial difficulties, according to local sources. On Aug. 11, a husband and wife in Khost died by suicide under what sources described as severe economic pressures.
Rights advocates say worsening poverty, restrictions on women, and lack of access to mental health services are fueling the crisis.
