Taliban said two men accused of armed robbery were killed during a clash with their forces in Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province.
Jumauddin Khaksar, spokesman for the Taliban’s police command in Kunduz, said a Kalashnikov rifle and more than 150,000 afghanis ($2,100) in stolen cash were recovered from the suspects.
Taliban have repeatedly claimed that crimes such as armed robbery, drug trafficking and other criminal offenses have declined since their return to power in 2021. However, reports from international monitors and accounts from residents indicate that theft, smuggling and violence continue in many parts of the country.
Rights groups have criticized the Taliban for carrying out public punishments — including flogging, executions and other corporal penalties — without transparent judicial proceedings or adherence to due process.
