WASHINGTON—A group assisting Afghan refugees in resettlement efforts has warned that the United States may impose a travel ban on Afghan nationals and others in the coming weeks.

The organization, AfghanEvac, urged Afghans holding valid U.S. visas and travel documents to enter the country as soon as possible, citing information from sources within the U.S. State Department.

“We are hearing from internal sources at the State Department that a travel ban on Afghan nationals (and others) may be implemented as early as next week,” the group wrote on X.

AfghanEvac said it does not yet have full details on the potential restrictions but will share further information as it becomes available.

Shawn VanDiver, the organization’s director, stated that Afghan citizens may not be able to enter the U.S., even with valid visas, if the restrictions take effect next week.

It remains unclear what legal or policy framework such a ban would follow.

The warning comes amid growing global restrictions on Afghan migrants, as several countries, including Pakistan and Iran, have intensified deportations of undocumented Afghans in recent months.
