WASHINGTON — Representative Tim Burchett, Republican of Tennessee, has called for swift congressional approval of the No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act, a bill aimed at ensuring U.S. aid does not indirectly support the Taliban.
In a post on X, Burchett announced he would hold a press conference on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. ET at the House Triangle to discuss H.R. 260, the legislation he introduced in January. “This bill needs to be passed in both chambers as soon as possible so it can be sent to President Donald Trump’s desk,” he wrote.
The bill seeks to require the State Department to establish policies preventing U.S. taxpayer dollars from reaching the Taliban. It also mandates detailed reporting on cash assistance programs in Afghanistan, outlining measures taken to prevent the militant group from accessing American aid.
Additionally, the legislation calls for greater transparency regarding the Afghan Fund and Afghanistan’s central bank, both of which have been closely scrutinized since the Taliban took control of the country in 2021.
Burchett has been a vocal critic of U.S. policies he argues benefit the Taliban, insisting on stricter oversight of aid distribution in Afghanistan. The bill is expected to face debate in Congress in the coming weeks.
