Taliban envoy discusses Kabul airport radar system with French diplomat

DOHA, Qatar — Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban’s ambassador to Qatar, met with Jean Marin, the chargé d’affaires of the French Embassy for Afghanistan, to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and issues related to the radar system at Kabul’s airport, according to the Taliban-run embassy.

The two also discussed regional and global issues, the statement said.

Shaheen was recently appointed as the Taliban’s envoy to Qatar by the group’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada. He is also the Taliban’s nominee for Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations, though the U.N. Security Council has yet to recognize the Taliban as the country’s legitimate representatives.

Since the fall of the former government in August 2021, several Western embassies, including France’s, have been operating out of Qatar rather than Kabul.
