Pakistani forces shelled parts of the Sarkano district in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar Province early Friday morning, local sources told Amu.
The attack, which occurred around 2 a.m., targeted the Nawa Pass area of Sarkano district with mortar fire. According to the sources, shells struck residential homes, causing significant damage and forcing local residents to flee their homes.
In response, Taliban reportedly took retaliatory action, though details about casualties or the extent of damage from the clashes remain unclear.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions between the Taliban and Pakistani border forces. Over the past two weeks, the Taliban have reportedly engaged in at least three skirmishes with Pakistani forces along the border.
Last month, Pakistani forces bombarded four villages in the Barmal district of Paktika Province, claiming the strikes targeted camps housing Waziristani refugees. Taliban officials said the attack killed 46 people, including women and children.
As of now, the Taliban have not commented on the overnight shelling in Kunar. The escalating border tensions have raised concerns about the humanitarian impact on civilians in these volatile areas, with many forced to leave their homes in search of safety.
