Traffic accident in Bamiyan kills one, injures 14

A traffic accident in Bamiyan Province late Monday left one person dead and 14 others injured, according to a statement from the Taliban’s provincial police office.

The accident occurred in the Kotal-e Hoz-e Shah area of Yakawlang District 1, where a passenger van collided with a freight vehicle, the statement said.

Six of the injured were reported to be in critical condition and were transported to Bamiyan Provincial Hospital for treatment, the statement added.

Preliminary investigations suggest that “recklessness and excessive speed” were the primary causes of the accident, according to the Taliban. The driver of the freight vehicle has been taken into custody as the investigation continues.

Traffic accidents are a growing concern in Afghanistan, where poor road infrastructure and a lack of enforcement of traffic laws contribute to frequent and deadly collisions. Last week, two separate accidents on the Kabul-Kandahar highway claimed more than 50 lives, underscoring the severity of the problem.
