At least five people were killed and nine others injured in two separate traffic accidents in Faryab Province on Friday, according to the Taliban-run Department of Information and Culture.

One of the accidents occurred along the Maimana-Jawzjan highway in Pashtunkot district, officials said. The victims included women and children.

Traffic accidents have surged across Afghanistan in recent months. According to data gathered by Amu, more than 20 people have died, and over 300 others have been injured in such incidents nationwide in the past three months alone.

Taliban officials from the traffic department attributed the rising number of accidents to driver negligence. However, many residents have pointed to the deteriorating condition of the country’s roads as a significant contributing factor.

The incidents highlight the growing risks on Afghanistan’s roadways as poor infrastructure and limited oversight compound the dangers of travel.
