Taliban publicly flog man in Kabul as corporal punishments continue

Taliban publicly flogged a man in Kabul on Thursday, sentencing him to 39 lashes and two years in prison on charges of “sodomy”, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

On Wednesday, Taliban announced that 17 people had been flogged in public for various offenses.

Over the past month, more than 70 individuals have been subjected to public floggings across different provinces for a range of allegations.

A United Nations Human Rights resolution adopted two weeks ago condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment, including stoning and death by wall-burial, as violations of international human rights standards.

The resolution also raised concerns about reports of extrajudicial punishments.
