An Afghan national was executed by Iranian authorities on Monday without prior notification to his family, according to a report by an Iranian human rights watchdog.
The group, Halvash, identified the man as Nisar Ahmad Rahmati, who was executed in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, Iran. Rahmati had been sentenced to death on drug-related charges following his arrest in 2019.
The report states that Rahmati was moved from the general ward of Vakilabad Prison to a separate room on Sunday, where preparations for his execution began. His death sentence was carried out early Monday, and he was not permitted a final visit with his family.
Iran Human Rights, another advocacy group, recently revealed that Iran has executed 19 people over the past two weeks, including two Afghan nationals. The increase in executions of Afghan citizens has drawn growing concern from human rights organizations, who say the number of such executions has surged since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021.
The Taliban government has not yet commented on Rahmati’s execution or the broader pattern of Afghan nationals facing execution in Iran.
Human rights groups continue to criticize Iran for its use of capital punishment, particularly in cases involving foreign nationals, and for what they describe as a lack of transparency in the judicial process.
