The Taliban-run meteorological department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in 25 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.
In a statement released Saturday, the department predicted rainfalls ranging between 15 and 40 millimeters, with immediate flooding expected in several regions, including Badakhshan, Takhar, Kabul, and Herat.
In addition to the rainfall, the department warned of strong winds, accompanied by dust storms, with speeds ranging from 50 to 70 kilometers per hour in the western and central parts of the country.
The warning comes as Afghanistan continues to grapple with the impacts of climate-related disasters. Recent flooding in Nangarhar province’s Kuz Kunar district has already claimed at least three lives and injured 20 others. According to the United Nations, Afghanistan is ranked as the sixth most vulnerable country to the global climate crisis.
