UN special rapporteur joins global campaign for girls’ education in Afghanistan

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has joined the global campaign “Afghan Girls’ Voices: Education Cannot Wait,” emphasizing that all women and girls have the right to education.

In a post on X, Bennett stated that “all women and girls have the right to education, adding, “Afghanistan cannot wait.”

The campaign was launched by the organization “Education Cannot Wait” to mark three years since the Taliban banned girls from attending school. The initiative calls on people around the world to raise their voices for Afghan girls’ education.

Since regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have prohibited girls above sixth grade from attending schools and universities. This move has sparked widespread domestic and international condemnation, though the Taliban have so far refused to reverse their policy.
