Taliban publicly flogged a man accused of “sodomy” on Monday in Balkh province, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

The man received 39 lashes following a ruling issued by the primary court in the Dehdadi district of the northern province of Balkh.

Despite strong condemnation from the United Nations and human rights organizations, the Taliban has continued to administer corporal punishment in several provinces over the past three years. More than 20 individuals have been flogged in various regions in the past month alone.

According to data compiled by Amu, over 600 people, including more than 110 women, have been flogged by the Taliban since their return to power.

Amnesty International has expressed serious concerns about the lack of access to fair trials within the Taliban’s judicial system, calling the continuation of such punishments a grave human rights violation.
