The Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network in a statement on August 15 said that the world should recognize the Afghan women’s rejection of the Taliban.
“The world should know that we, the people of Afghanistan, reject the Taliban,” said the movement.
The movement described the Taliban as a “terrorist organization” and urged the international community to refrain from supporting them. It also called on the world to listen to the voices of Afghan women who have suffered under the Taliban’s rule.
“The international community must continue to apply political pressure and sanctions on the Taliban, especially their criminal leaders, and must not recognize this ignorant group,” the statement read.
The protesting women vowed to unite under the banners of education, work, and freedom, pledging to continue their fight against “darkness and ignorance” until Afghanistan is free.
This statement coincides with calls from civil society and human rights activists in various countries for global protests against the Taliban on August 15. These activists have condemned the Taliban’s rule as a form of “apartheid” and have urged the United Nations to officially recognize it as such.
Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, no country has formally recognized their government. In the wake of their return to power, the Taliban have systematically stripped women and girls of their basic rights, imposing severe restrictions on many aspects of their lives.
Taliban has banned girls above the sixth grade from continuing their education and have closed university doors to women, effectively barring them from pursuing higher education.
