As the third anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan approaches, female protesters issued a statement condemning the regime for imposing widespread misery on the Afghan people.

The statement highlighted the deprivation of women’s rights, along with the growing issues of poverty, unemployment, and insecurity under Taliban rule.

The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021. Since then, the statement noted, the group has been responsible for numerous abuses, including forced marriages, arbitrary detentions, killings, and the seizure of property. The protesters emphasized that the Taliban’s oppressive policies have disproportionately targeted women and girls across the country.

The protesters called on the international community and human rights organizations to pressure the Taliban to end its oppression of Afghan women and girls. “The deprivation of women from their basic rights will cause human disasters in Afghanistan, whose consequences will spread to the region and the world,” the statement warned.

They also urged Afghans, particularly prominent figures, human rights activists, and cultural leaders, to speak out against the Taliban’s actions. In their message, the protesters encouraged Afghan women and girls to resist the oppression and not to surrender to the regime’s harsh policies.
