KABUL, Afghanistan — Indrika Ratwatte, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan, has stated that the country remains in a critical situation, with its people facing numerous daily challenges.
Meanwhile, the UN Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan announced that its steering committee has approved essential interventions to support the basic needs of thousands of internally displaced people and returnees, as well as to address drug use disorders.
Ratwatte highlighted that many Afghans, particularly women and children, continue to be severely impacted by climate change and the challenging economic environment.
“Five million people have been assisted through the $230 million granted to the Afghanistan Special Trust Fund (ASTF) by 13 donors so far,” Ratwatte said.
Afghanistan has plunged into a dire humanitarian and economic crisis since the Taliban came to power, as most donors suspended their funding in response to the Taliban’s oppressive policies towards women and girls.
