Citizens and politicians across Afghanistan have reacted with exuberant joy following the national cricket team’s historic win against Australia in the T20 World Cup.
Celebrations erupted in various provinces, including major cities like Nangarhar, Khost, and the capital, Kabul.
Residents took to the streets, reveling with music, dancing, and fireworks.
Former Vice President Amrullah Saleh congratulated the team on his X account, highlighting the display of Afghanistan’s three-colored national flag by Khost residents.
“Congratulations to the Afghanistan cricket team for their victory,” he noted. “And my heartfelt thanks to the people of Khost for rejecting and boycotting the Taliban flag during the celebrations.”
Former President Hamid Karzai also took to X to express his delight, describing the win as a source of national joy. “I congratulate all my dear compatriots on this success and wish further achievements for the national cricket team players,” he wrote.
Former Member of Parliament Fawzia Koofi called the victory “a moment to be proud of,” while former intelligence chief Rahmatullah Nabil referred to it as a “proud victory” against Australia.
Afghanistan’s cricket team defeated Australia for the first time in the T20 World Cup, winning by 21 runs on Saturday night at Arnos Vale Stadium.
