Taliban member killed in Baluchistan had Pakistani citizenship

QUETTA, Pakistan — A high-profile Taliban member who was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Quetta, Baluchistan, had posed as a Pakistani citizen, the BBC reported, citing a Pakistani police official.

The official identified the man as Mohammad Omar Jan Akhundzada, who reportedly owned a house in the area. Akhundzada was killed two days ago. Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, condemned the killing and labeled it an act by “enemies of Islam.”

Reports indicate that several Taliban members have assumed false Pakistani identities and acquired travel documents.
