Proposal for regional contact group on Afghanistan stalls: Report

A proposal to establish a “Regional Contact Group” aimed at addressing the crisis in Afghanistan has been halted due to conflicts among the involved parties, according to Pakistani media reports.

The initiative, originally proposed by Iran, faced obstacles over disagreements on the composition of the group.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking after a two-day meeting of envoys on Afghanistan in Doha, mentioned discussions on the “regional contact group.”

The meeting also featured a session hosted by the Taliban titled “Afghanistan’s Regional Cooperation Initiatives,” which included envoys from regional countries, including India.

However, The Express Tribune reported, citing sources, that the proposal has stalled due to a lack of consensus on which countries should be included in the group.

“The proposal appears to be a non-starter,” a source said as quoted by The Express Tribune.

Taliban so far has not commented on the matter.
