Diplomat says US will remember those who sacrificed for education in Afghanistan

US Charge d’Affaires Karen Decker

On the 11th anniversary of Anne Smedinghoff’s death, Karen Decker, the U.S. charge d’Affaires for Afghanistan, affirmed that the U.S. will not forget those who paid the “ultimate price” for education in Afghanistan.

Decker praised Smedinghoff’s service and sacrifice as inspirational. “We offer our tribute to her and to all who paid the ultimate price – by continuing to promote education and human rights in Afghanistan. We do not forget,” she stated.

Smedinghoff, 25, was one of five Americans killed in a suicide attack on April 6, 2013, in Zabul province.

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
