Taliban releases Sultan Ali Jawadi, Editor-in-Chief of Radio Nasim

Taliban released Sultan Ali Jawadi, editor-in-chief of Radio Nasim, from prison on Saturday, according to Jawadi’s relatives who spoke to Amu by phone.

In December 2023, Jawadi was sentenced to one year in prison by the Taliban on charges of promoting “propaganda” against them. However, sources told Amu that he was released after serving more than six months, with the remainder of his term forgiven in observance of Eid al-Fitr. Javadi was freed around 12:30 p.m. Kabul time on Saturday.

Javadi and two other reporters from Nasim radio station were arrested in Daikundi in October 2023.

Since its takeover of Afghanistan, the Taliban has detained dozens of journalists and media workers, with reports of torture and mistreatment in prisons.
