Bus crash in South Africa kills 45 Easter pilgrims, Transport Ministry says

JOHANNESBURG — A bus crash in South Africa’s Limpopo province killed 45 Easter pilgrims and seriously injured one, the Department of Transport announced Thursday.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control and collided with barriers on a bridge near Mamatlakala. The bus went over the bridge, crashed to the ground, and caught fire, the department stated.

The victims were Easter pilgrims traveling from Botswana to Moria, a town in Limpopo.

President Cyril Ramaphosa sent condolences to Botswana and pledged support, his office stated.

An 8-year-old child, the sole survivor, is receiving medical care at a nearby hospital, according to Limpopo’s Department of Transport. Authorities reported some victims were burned beyond recognition, while others were trapped in the debris or scattered around the crash site.
