Rain, snowfall claim at least 20 lives in Afghanistan amid cold wave

At least 20 people have died and 14 others have been injured due to heavy rain and snowfall across various provinces of Afghanistan since Feb. 20, the Taliban reported on Saturday.

Mohammad Abdullah Sayiq, the Taliban’s spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority, stated online that the inclement weather has resulted in human and financial losses in at least 20 provinces.

From Feb. 20 to March 2, the adverse weather conditions led to four deaths and injured nine individuals, Sayiq added. The Taliban did not disclose the specific provinces of these casualties.

The statement also noted that 452 residential houses were destroyed or damaged by the severe weather, including 238 homes in Kandahar province and at least 70 in Parwan province, with more than 5,250 livestock lost as well.
