The Qatari Foreign Ministry said that an Austrian national was released from Taliban prison after mediation by the Qatari government.

The individual, recently freed from Taliban custody, arrived in Doha prior to his final destination.

Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State of Foreign Affairs, expressed “gratitude” to the Taliban for their cooperation in the release process, according to a statement by Qatar foreign ministry.

He also emphasized Qatar’s “strong bilateral ties” with Austria.

In an interview with local media earlier in January, a senior Taliban Office of Prison Administration official disclosed that 25 foreign nationals are currently detained by the Taliban.
