Mumbai Crime Branch detains Afghan national for ‘illegal residency’

The Mumbai Crime Branch has detained a 38-year-old Afghan national, Zaheer Ali Khan, for allegedly residing illegally in Mumbai for 17 years, according to Indian media reports.

Reports indicate that Khan presented a PAN card and a driving license in the name of Zaheer, claiming Indian citizenship. However, a thorough investigation revealed he had provided false information to authorities.

The Mumbai Crime Branch’s action followed information about several Afghan nationals living illegally in Mumbai’s Wadala area. During a search of Khan’s residence, officials found an Afghan passport, PAN card, identity card, and vaccination certificate.

After discovering Khan’s false claim of Indian citizenship, the Crime Branch brought him in for intensive interrogation. During questioning, Khan confessed to being an Afghan citizen and admitted to living in Mumbai since 2007.
