OIC to focus on Afghanistan at upcoming summits in Gambia and Cameroon

JEDDAH — The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said it will prioritize the situation in Afghanistan in its upcoming Islamic Summit in The Gambia and the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Cameroon.

Tarig Ali Bakheet, the OIC’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, participated in the Doha, Qatar meeting of special envoys for Afghanistan, chaired by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on Feb. 18-19, 2024.

During the meeting, Ambassador Bakheet emphasized the OIC’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan and engaging in constructive dialogue with Taliban on various issues as outlined in the Council of Foreign Ministers’ resolutions, the organization said.

Bakheet highlighted the OIC’s efforts in providing humanitarian aid, deploying scholars’ delegations, and organizing a conference on women’s rights in Islam, hosted by Saudi Arabia. He affirmed that the situation in Afghanistan would be a focal point at the upcoming Islamic Summit in The Gambia and the Council of Foreign Ministers in Cameroon.

Additionally, on the sidelines of the Doha meeting, Bakheet conducted several discussions with international special envoys to Afghanistan.
