Azerbaijan plans to open embassy in Kabul, says Taliban

Azerbaijani ambassador to Afghanistan, Ilham Mammadov, has presented an official note from his country’s foreign ministry about plans to open an embassy in Kabul, Taliban said in a statement on Thursday.

The statement added that this would mark the first time Azerbaijan wants to establish an embassy in Kabul and that an ambassador-level diplomat will be sent to Afghanistan.

It added that the Azerbaijani diplomat in a meeting with Taliban’s foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi discussed diplomatic relations as well as economic cooperation and other relevant matters.

As of now, the Azerbaijani government has not officially commented on the opening of its embassy in Kabul.

Taliban is yet to be recognized by any country but a number of countries have diplomatic offices in Kabul after August 2021, the fall of the republic government.
