Taliban assessing ‘meaningful participation’ in Doha meeting

KABUL, Afghanistan — Tomas Niklasson, the European Union’s special envoy for Afghanistan, met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul on Wednesday.

A Taliban statement revealed that Muttaqi expressed a generally “positive view” towards the upcoming Doha meeting, noting that they are evaluating “meaningful participation” in the conference.

The discussions also covered the recent special envoys’ meeting in London and the forthcoming Doha meeting.

The United Nations-organized meeting is slated for Feb. 18 and 19. One of the primary items on its agenda is the appointment of a new UN special envoy. A Taliban spokesperson recently stated that they “will not cooperate” with the soon-to-be-appointed UN special envoy.
