UN special coordinator meets with Taliban deputy chief minister in Kabul

Less than two weeks ahead of the Doha meeting on Afghanistan, UN Special Coordinator Feridun Sinirlioglu, who is visiting Kabul, met with Taliban Deputy Chief Minister Mawlawi Abdul Kabir.

The Taliban-run national broadcaster reported that Sinirlioglu said, “The World Bank will hold a meeting about Afghanistan in the near future.”

According to the broadcaster, Sinirlioglu mentioned that the meeting would discuss “the development of Afghanistan’s banking sector, the end of sanctions, and the resumption of the World Bank’s remaining projects in Afghanistan.”

Kabir stated in the meeting that they expect “effective measures at the Doha meeting regarding the reconstruction of Afghanistan, humanitarian aid, and the lifting of banking sanctions.”

The United Nations, the World Bank, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) have not yet commented on the meeting.

The Taliban have not confirmed their participation in the Doha meeting scheduled for Feb. 18-19.
