A four-day polio vaccination campaign targeting 7.5 million children began Monday in several provinces, including Herat, Kandahar, and Nimroz in western Afghanistan, according to the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Health.

This initiative follows a seven-day campaign in December that vaccinated 2.5 million children under 10 in eastern Afghanistan.

The Taliban-run Ministry of Public Health announced in December 2023 an aim to vaccinate 8.8 million children nationwide.

The latest poliovirus case was recorded in Nangarhar province at the end of the previous month.

Afghanistan has seen six new polio cases this year, all in Nangarhar, raising concerns about the virus spreading to other areas. The most recent case emerged in Nangarhar’s Khogyani district on Sept. 28, 2023.
