Fazlur Rehman’s Kabul trip postponed following convoy attack

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F), announced Monday his visit to Afghanistan is likely to occur next week.

Originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 3, the trip was postponed following an attack on his convoy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the previous day.

Rehman, addressing a press conference, noted that the delay was also due to the ongoing election situation in Pakistan. “We share cultural and religious ties [with Afghanistan]. We are one, and the atmosphere of mistrust between the two countries must end,” he said.

Rehman narrowly escaped an attack on his convoy in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023.

The incident took place at the Yarik interchange near a toll plaza, where his convoy was fired upon from multiple directions.
