UN’s Bennett urges Taliban to free detained rights defenders

On Human Rights Day, UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett issued a call for the release of all human rights defenders from Taliban custody, emphasizing the release of four women’s rights activists.

“I call on the Taliban to mark Human Rights Day by releasing all human rights defenders detained for standing up for human rights, including the four women activists arrested since September 19th in Afghanistan,” he stated on Sunday.

The detained women’s rights activists, namely Zholia Parsi, Neda Parwani, Manizha Seddiqi, and Parisa Azada, were arrested in September and remain in Taliban custody.

According to a recent report by Human Rights Watch, additional activists, whose names have not been disclosed, are also detained by the Taliban.
