Blast targets mosque in northern Afghanistan; at least 19 killed, say sources

A blast happened at a mosque in Pul-e-Khumri city, the center of the northern province of Baghlan, during Friday prayers, sources from the province confirmed.

At least 19 people were killed in the attack on a Shia mosque in Baghlan. The 19 were profiled at a group funeral ceremony. Initially, local media was told that the death toll was only seven while most families were barred from speaking to the press.

The blast happened at Imam Zaman Mosque, belonged to the Shias community in the area, on the first avenue of Silo in Pul-e-Khumri city.

Taliban in a statement later in the day said that seven people were killed in the explosion.

The incident was a suicide attack that happened inside a mosque packed with worshippers during the Friday prayers.
