Quake-affected residents in Herat appeal for assistance

In the wake of devastating earthquakes in Herat, local residents have requested urgent aid as a UN agency reported a grim toll of over 1,000 lives lost and more than 1,600 individuals injured.

The seismic events occurred on Saturday, October 7th, in the western region of the country, specifically 35 km (20 miles) northwest of Herat city, within the Zinda Jan district. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured one of the quakes at a magnitude of 6.3.

“Thirteen members of my family are injured, and they need urgent support, you can see the situation here, many people have been martyred, and in some places the entire family is dead. We are so worried and we need help,” a Herat resident said.

“This earthquake has affected us a lot. I personally lost two of my family members in this incident, one was my sister and other was my son,” a Herat resident said.

Amid the wreckage of destroyed homes, the affected communities find themselves in dire need of assistance, with many having lost both family members and their residences.
