The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is expected to host a meeting about the ongoing situation in Afghanistan within the next 19 days, the UAE’s envoy to the UN said in a tweet, adding that Afghanistan is on the top of the agenda of the council.
The agenda of the meeting is not clear so far but the UAE envoy at the UN and the head of the UNSC, Lana Nusseibeh at a press conference on Thursday assured of efforts to coordinate member countries’ activities for Afghanistan.
This comes as the UN has raised its concerns about the Taliban’s links with al-Qaeda and the lack of an inclusive government in Afghanistan.
“Decisions by the UNSC for the world’s cooperation with the people of Afghanistan are essential,” said Wais Naseri, an analyst in political affairs.
Concerns about violations of human rights and women’s rights by the Taliban are expected to be a key part of the UNSC meeting.
“Engagement with the Taliban should be ignored. We hope that women’s messages are not ignored (at the meeting) and we hope that Taliban’s ongoing crimes should be considered,” said Huda Khamosh, a women’s rights activist.
This comes as the UNSC hosted a meeting about Afghanistan in Doha on May 2, discussing the situation in the country. Special envoys of various countries for Afghanistan who attended the meeting expressed their concerns about women and human rights situation in Afghanistan.
