Daesh claims responsibility for explosion targeting journalists

Daesh has claimed responsibility for the explosion targeting a gathering of journalists in Mazar-e-Sharif, in Balkh province, on Saturday, SITE Intelligence Group confirmed.

In a statement via Amaq News Agency, Daesh said Sunday the explosion was caused by a “parcel bomb that IS fighters managed to place and detonate.”

The explosion happened at the Tabyan Cultural Center on Saturday and left at least two people dead and almost 30 wounded, including 15 journalists.

Sources in Balkh said Sunday that the Taliban had confiscated the phones of all journalists who were wounded in the bombing and had prevented some of them from returning home, despite them being cleared medically.

Sources also said that a number of journalists who visited the wounded reporters in hospital had been “detained” by the Taliban.
