Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s special envoy for Afghanistan, has arrived in Kabul and is expected to hold talks with senior Taliban officials, the Taliban Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
Russian outlets reported that Kabulov would hold “consultative meetings” with Taliban officials, focusing on expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation, as well as strengthening regional engagement.
The Taliban Foreign Ministry said Kabulov was scheduled to meet with Amir Khan Muttaqi and other senior Taliban officials.
According to the ministry, the discussions will cover political and economic issues, along with other areas of mutual interest.
The visit comes as Russia continues to expand its engagement with Taliban, while balancing security concerns tied to Afghanistan. Russian officials have repeatedly warned about threats posed by militant groups operating in and around the country, particularly those that could affect Central Asia.
Taliban have rejected those concerns, saying they do not allow any individual or group to use Afghanistan’s territory to carry out attacks against other countries.
Russia is the only country that has recognized the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, keeping its embassy in Kabul open and engaging in diplomatic and economic discussions.
