Roof collapse in southern Afghanistan kills three after heavy rains

Sangin district, Helmand province.

At least three people, including two children and a woman, were killed when the roof of a house collapsed during heavy rain in the southern province of Helmand, the Taliban’s Department of Information and Culture said in a statement.

The collapse occurred in the village of Amanullah Kariz in Sangin district, in Helmand, the statement added.

The incident took place around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, the statement said, attributing the collapse to intense rainfall that had weakened the structure.

Six other people were injured, most of them women and children, and were taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to the statement.

Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather, and poorly constructed homes in rural areas are particularly at risk during periods of heavy rain.
