The Taliban’s Defense Ministry claimed on Friday that its air force carried out strikes on several Pakistani military bases, including one near Islamabad, in what it described as a retaliatory operation.

In a statement, the ministry said the strikes occurred around 11 a.m. local time and targeted sites near Faizabad in Islamabad, a military camp in Nowshera, an army base in Jamrud and a military complex in Abbottabad.

The ministry said the operation were conducted “successfully” and struck what it described as key military centers and facilities of the Pakistani Army.

The claims could not be independently verified, and Pakistani officials did not immediately comment.

The Taliban said the strikes were in response to Pakistani airstrikes overnight on Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia.

Late Thursday, the Taliban said they had targeted several Pakistani military outposts along the border, claiming that 55 Pakistani forces were killed. Pakistan, in turn, claimed that 133 Taliban members were killed in its overnight airstrikes, while the Taliban said those strikes caused no casualties.
