A suicide bomber killed at least five people and wounded 10 others late on Friday in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police and rescue officials said.
The attack occurred during a wedding gathering at the home of Noor Alam Mehsud, head of a local peace committee, in Dera Ismail Khan district, said district police chief Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada.
Local media reported that the explosion took place while guests were dancing, causing part of the room’s roof to collapse and trapping several people under the debris.
“The blast was a suicide attack,” local authorities told Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, adding that an emergency had been declared at the district’s main hospital.
Bilal Ahmed Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial rescue service Rescue 1122, said five bodies and 10 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes amid heightened militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier this month, gunmen killed four members of a peace committee in the Bannu district of the province, according to media reports.
