At least six people were killed in renewed clashes over a gold mining site in northeastern Afghanistan’s Takhar province, local sources said on Monday.

Residents of Chah Ab district clashed with Taliban forces and workers from a Taliban-linked gold mining company, the sources told Amu TV.

Five local residents and one employee of the mining company were killed, while at least 16 others were wounded, according to the sources.

Protests erupted on Friday over what residents described as environmental damage, harm to farmland and gold extraction carried out without sharing revenues with the local community, the sources said.

Taliban have since cordoned off parts of the mining area in a section of the district known locally as Samti Block One, they added.

According to the sources, protesters briefly seized several gold mining companies operating in the area and set fire to their equipment and tents.

Taliban have not commented on the incident.
