Clash erupts in northern Afghanistan over gold mining project

A clash broke out in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province after local residents protested against a company operating a gold mining site, sources said on Friday.

Residents of Chah Ab district confronted workers of the mining company and damaged equipment and vehicles, the sources said, adding that several people were injured. The exact number of casualties was not immediately clear.

The dispute appeared to be linked to local opposition to the mining operation, though the precise cause of the confrontation has not been confirmed. Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the incident.

Afghanistan has seen growing tensions in recent years over mining projects, as communities complain of limited consultation, environmental damage and a lack of transparency in the management of natural resources.
