Construction begins on flyover in Kabul

Construction work began on a flyover in central Kabul on Tuesday, as Taliban authorities said the project aims to ease chronic traffic congestion in the capital.

Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Taliban’s deputy chief minister for administrative affairs, said the flyover will run from Sedarat Square to the Joy-e-Shir road and will be 283 metres long and 18 metres wide.

The project will cost 462 million afghanis (about $7.0 million), he said.

Hanafi also outlined progress on two similar projects elsewhere in Kabul. A flyover under construction at Baraki Square, measuring 470 metres in length and 20 metres in width, is about 45% complete, he said. That project is expected to cost 580 million afghanis, or roughly $8.8 million.

A second flyover planned for the same area will be built in a later phase at an estimated cost of 762 million afghanis, or about $11.5 million, he added.

Kabul has struggled for years with severe traffic congestion, exacerbated by rapid population growth, limited public transport and aging infrastructure.
