Paktia residents face ‘poor mobile phone coverage’

Residents of Zurmat district in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktia province said they are faced with limited access to mobile phone and internet services, adding that poor coverage is disrupting daily life.

People in Makawi village and surrounding areas said weak or unavailable telecom networks make it difficult to communicate, even in emergencies.

“Our area is secure and suitable for installing telecom towers,” said Gul Wali, a local resident. “The signal would work well here, and people urgently need these services.”

Other residents said the lack of reliable mobile coverage means they often learn about emergencies or deaths with long delays.

“Even if someone dies or an incident happens, no one finds out through phone networks,” another resident said. “People have to physically go from house to house to pass on the news.”

Concerns about poor telecommunications are not limited to Zurmat.

Residents in other parts of the country, including the capital Kabul, have also complained of declining mobile and internet service quality, saying disruptions have increasingly affected work, education and everyday communication.
