Taliban have flogged 18 people in Kabul after convicting them of drug trafficking and selling alcoholic beverages, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

The court said the individuals were sentenced to between 10 and 39 lashes and prison terms ranging from seven months to three years.

A day earlier, the Taliban publicly flogged four people in the northern provinces of Jawzjan and Balkh on similar charges.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have carried out corporal punishment against more than 1,200 people across Afghanistan for various offences, according to official statements.

The United Nations and international human rights groups have repeatedly called on the Taliban to end corporal punishment, describing it as a violation of international human rights norms, but the Taliban have continued to enforce such penalties.
